Government Polytechnic Gariyaband was established in 2009 by the Government of Chhattisgarh with the objective of strengthening technical education and skill development in tribal, rural, and educationally backward regions of the state. The institute commenced its academic activities in 2010 with the admission of its first batch of students. It was established as the 23rd Polytechnic of Chhattisgarh, with a vision to create skilled technical manpower capable of contributing to regional as well as national development.
The institute is located in Gariyaband district, approximately 100 km from Raipur, on the Raipur–Devbhog Road (NH-130C). In its initial phase, the institute functioned under the academic and administrative guidance of Government Polytechnic Dhamtari at the ITI Campus, Gariyaband. Subsequently, the institute shifted to its permanent campus near the Collectorate Office at Darrapara Village, Gariyaband, spread over an area of 6.22 acres, providing a conducive environment for technical learning and overall student development.
Government Polytechnic Gariyaband offers AICTE-approved diploma programs, affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai, in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. The institute is among the few early polytechnics in Chhattisgarh to introduce Diploma in Mining Engineering, and over the years, it has earned recognition as one of the leading institutes for diploma-level mining education in the state.
The institution plays a significant role in developing skilled and industry-ready technicians by offering industry-oriented and outcome-based diploma education aligned with societal, regional, and industrial needs. Emphasis is laid on practical training, laboratory work, hands-on learning, field exposure, and technical competence, enabling students to pursue employment, entrepreneurship, and higher education with confidence.
To promote inclusive and equitable access to technical education, the institute implements various student support and financial assistance schemes for learners from economically weaker sections, including fee exemption, government scholarships, and free textbooks under the Book Bank Scheme. These initiatives significantly reduce financial barriers and encourage students from rural and tribal backgrounds to pursue technical education.
